A Defensive Game Plan

2 Timothy 3:1-5

• Game Plan: A specific strategy to bring success on the field of play against a given set of contingencies

• Defensive Game Plan: a strategic plan to protect your family from the negative cultural impact

Characteristics of Secular Culture

1. Self-absorbed (2 Timothy 3:2a)

2. Irreverent (2 Timothy 3:2b)
   An individual that respects no one else will eventually not be respected by anyone else.

3. Cruel (2 Timothy 3:3-4a)

4. Irreligious (2 Timothy 3:4-5)

How to Impact Culture
2 Timothy 3:10

1. Live with purpose in your family. (1 Corinthians 9:26 TLB)

2. Model and pass on your faith.

3. Train your children in patience.

4. Teach your children to love.

5. Encourage endurance.
   



Discussion Guide

Use these questions to reflect on this week's message as a family or group.

1. We defined a Defensive Game Plan as a strategic plan to protect your family from negative cultural impact. What are some specific examples of the negative culture in which we live? How have you seen culture negatively impact your family?

2. Read 2 Timothy 3:1-5. How does the example of culture in this passage compare to our current culture?

3. In 2 Timothy 3:10, Paul challenges Timothy to follow the pattern of his life. How is this different from when parents may say “do what I say and not what I do”? Whose life do you try to model yours after? Who may be following in your footsteps?

4. If the people closest to you emulated your life, would they look like Jesus? Why or why not?

5. We made a checklist of 5 ways to influence and lead those closest to us. How can we apply each to our current experiences with our family and those we have influence over? (Purpose, Faith, Patience, Love, Endurance)
