An Extended Family

Philemon 1:4-21

An Extended Family

1. In an extended family, more people are rescued for the mission. (1:9b-11)

2. In an extended family, love is freely chosen. (1:12-14)

3. In an extended family, love's reward is magnified. (1:15-16)

4. In an extended family, we are all beneficiaries of every relationship. (1:17-21)

Use these questions to reflect on this week's message as a family or group.

1. Has there been a time in your life where you have experienced “extended family”? Describe some of the things that made it meaningful.

2. We talk a lot about “caring well for one another.” Read Philemon 1:4-5. How do we see this in Philemon’s ministry?

3. True or False: Faith is a private matter. Read Philemon 1:6. What does this verse teach about “partnership”?

4. Being a part of a family can be difficult and messy. Which of these “one another” statements do you find most difficult: Be devoted to one another; honor one another above yourself; clothe yourselves in humility toward one another; have equal concern for one another?

5. Read Philemon 1:8-9. What was the big “ask” that Paul had to make? How is this a great example of grace and truth?
