Brand New - Week 1
Understanding the Temple Model
Worship is acknowledging that God is transcendent and glorious and that He is worthy of our full allegiance and devotion.
Church is a community of people who follow the teachings of Jesus which help us find and follow God.
Brand New Model
New Covenant (Luke 22:20 )
New Command (John 13:34a)
New Ethic (John 13:34b)
New Movement (John 13:35)
John 10:10b
Eternal life is a prerequisite for abundant life, but not a guarantee of it.
Churches hold on to things that hold us back.
Four Components of the Temple Model
Sacred Place (2 Chronicles 32:12b)
Sacred Text (Deuteronomy 6:1-2)
Sacred Men (Deuteronomy 21:5)
Sincere Followers (Deuteronomy 6:3a)
Shortcomings of the Temple Model
The law is perfect, but we aren’t. (Galatians 3:10)
The Temple Model doesn’t offer a relational fix. (Hebrews 10:11)
Jesus said it was temporary. (Hebrews 8:8,13)
Examples of Temple Model Thinking
My spiritual life is all about sin management.
I focus on rules and regulations rather than relationships.
Church is my weekly check-in to see if I’m still good with God.
I believe there’s some sort of ritual that makes me right with God and releases me from making things right with the person I sinned against.
Religion has me consumed with self rather than sharing it with others.
